The Undergraduate Program in Journalism at PUC-Rio

Program Overview

The Journalism course at PUC-Rio is one of the most traditional in Brazil. It graduates professionals who are active both nationally and internationally. The main objective is to train journalists with a high capacity for critical reflection, ethical responsibility, and with multiple competencies - theoretical, technical, technological, and aesthetic.

The student will gain knowledge of the formats and languages of the media adapted to the new horizons of audio, audiovisual, print and online, in view of the growing articulations in the media platforms. All this knowledge of digital communication and information technologies will be applied to the development of journalistic productions, such as investigative reporting and content associated with data journalism.

Mastery of the various processes will lead to action on the various professional fronts: communication vehicles (television channels, newspapers, magazines, radio, digital platforms); communication consultancies, corporate communication in public and private companies; audio and video production companies; digital ventures. All this learning is added to the development of innovation and experimentation processes in the field of Journalism. Our graduates combine practical knowledge, critical thinking, humanistic vision, and a sense of entrepreneurship.

"The Journalism course offered by PUC-Rio has the characteristics necessary for the profession: it is digital, creative, critical, and connected to all screens. It is mutant, technological, transdisciplinary, with one foot in tradition and another in experience. A contemporary look with a vision of the future. It interprets data, analyzes conjunctures, and produces in networks", summarizes the course coordinator, Leonel Aguiar.

The course has a group of experient professors. The course program is flexible and follows the constant changes in the area, to keep up with the new production and distribution processes of journalistic content.

Background

The Journalism program at PUC-Rio was created in 1951. After the 1968 University Reform, the program was renamed to Social Communication, offered under the Department by the same name. Over the course of next six decades, the program went through several changes driven by wider educational reforms, adapting to job market demands with a more versatile course of study that included Publicity & Advertising in addition to Journalism. A third discipline, Cinema Studies, was added in 2005. It has flourished into one of the most respected undergraduate programs in Journalism, Publicity & Advertising, and Cinema Studies in the country.

In 2020, the Journalism course was updated, aligned with technological and media transformations, new socioeconomic demands, and international standards related to teaching and practice in the communications area. It also launched the Media Studies undergraduate program, which incorporates the fields of Advertising and Cinema, and integrates knowledge, reflections, and dynamics aimed at the formation of polyvalent professionals. Its curriculum provides a comprehensive and critical education in Humanities.
